5th International Conference «Pharmaceutical Business in Russia 2010» was held on 11–12 February, 2010 by infor-media Russia. The conference attracted more than 300 pharmaceutical marker players.

Representatives of Federal Service for the Supervision in Healthcare and Social Development, State Duma of the Russian Federation, Federal Tariff Service, and Federal Antimonopoly Service of the Russian Federation, chief executives of pharmaceutical companies, retailers, pharmacy chains, industry associations and key analytics discussed development prospects of Russian pharmaceutical industry in conjunction with the law approval “On Circulation of Medicines” and implementation of national program “Pharma 2020”
The conference aroused interest among mass media: key industry trade press, press agencies and TV-channels. Hot news was embodied in articles which were issued after the conference and where some speakers commented on current market situation.

First in 2010 year meeting of pharmaceutical market participants started with summing up of the passed year, analysis of the crisis’ impact, analysis of the market development and national policy.

Elena Telnova, Acting Head, Federal Service for the Supervision in Healthcare and Social Development, Timofey Nizhegorodtsev, Head of Department for Control over Social Sphere and Commerce, Federal Antimonopoly Service, Sergei Kolesnikov, Deputy Chairman, State Duma Health Committee, State Duma of the Russian Federation, Grigoriy Kiyashko, Deputy Head of Head of Department for Price Regulation in Defense Industry and Basic Social Services and Products, Federal Tariff Service delivered reports. Participants of the conference knew about Great Britain experience in the field of pharmaceuticals industry regulation from the report of Heather Simmonds, Director, Prescription Medicines Code of Practice Authority. Report was beamed from London to Moscow.

Presentations of Nikolay Demidov, General Director, PHARMEXPERT Market Research Center, and Sergey Shulyak, General Director, DSM Group, were particularly noted. They presented to the audience's attention analytical reviews as of 2009 year and shared some predictions for the future. In particular Mr. Shulyak told about changes in prices and shares in essential drug list. Nikolay Demidov suggested in his report the main findings of the 2009 year for CIS and Georgia pharmaceutical markets, as well as data on the dynamics of sales in prescription and OTC segment of Russia retail market.

Alternative strategies of companies development in new terms and successful business solutions were discussed by the leaders of Russian and international pharmaceutical companies. Marina Veldanova, Head of representative office in Russia, Beaufour Ipsen Pharma, shared views how to make the crisis a source of opportunities for further development. Thus, proposed development vector "from the product – to the consumer" implies new approaches to pricing, «market access» approach, portfolio marketing instead of merchandising, the main focus should be made on sales effectiveness and cooperation between the payer and the consumer in formation of decisions. Vadim Yatsuk, Executive Director, NGO ANTIVIRAL, made a report on the transition to innovative development strategy. He analyzed all strategy aspects of the company. Alexey Molchanov, General Director, CV PROTEK, told about the new model of distribution. Results of marketing activity of market participants in 2009 were reflected in the report by Oleg Feldman, CEO, COMCON-Pharma. Participants of the conference saw growth dynamics of MedReps’s visits to doctors, changes in pharmaceutical products purchase. New solutions for CRM program were presented by Sergey Sokolovsky, CRM Director, Cegedim Dendrite Russia.

Investment projects in the pharmaceutical business were discussed at a separate session of the event.
Vladimir Shipkov, Executive Director, Association of International Pharmaceuticals Manufacturers (AIPM), Zakhar Golant, Vice Chairman, Committee for Health Care of St. Petersburg, Aleksandr Telminov, Sub-prefect, Zelenograd administrative district of Moscow discussed current problems and perspectives.

Alexey Konov’s (Investment Director, Bioprocess Capital Partners Management Company) presentation was devoted to venture capital investments. He explained the reason why venture is investing in biotech, how to solve short-and long-term tasks, and what are the possible strategic directions of work.

It should be noted that traditionally within the framework of the conference a few open discussions were held. This time the main emphasis was laid on the future of pharmaceutical products’ distribution, retail and consolidation of pharmaceutical business in Russia. Alexander Kuzin (Rigla) and Igor Varlamov (Alliance Healthcare Russia), Andrey Mladentsev (PHARMAT) shared with the participants their forecasts and business schemes to build an effective management system.

Discussion on establishing a constructive dialogue with the government and GR at the pharmaceutical business was very interesting. Viktor Dmitriev (Association of Russian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers) and Pavel Tolstykh (GR Research and Consulting Center) took part at the discussion.

The final session was devoted to the pharmaceutical market of the CIS countries: identification of opportunities for development financing, analysis of the impact of the crisis and regulatory risks.

During two-day conference were discussed the most important and urgent market issues, voiced opinions and forecasts of producers, distributors and regulators, identifying some vectors of industry development. And, of course, the participants were provided with all the conditions for dialogue, negotiations and contacts exchange.

There was a Tuscan wines degustation and draw of invitation tickets to the next infor-media Russia conference “The autumn session of pharmaceutical business leaders of the CIS”.
